Courses are held at Castle Orchard, near Ledbury, Herefordshire HR8 2RH. They begin at 10.00am and end at 4.00pm. Numbers are kept to a maximum of 7 people per course.
All materials, jars, bottles, wax, oils, dried and fresh herbs, a vegetarian lunch with drinks and cakes, are included in the cost of the course.

These practical courses will enable participants to make herbal remedies from fresh and dried herbs.
A hands-on approach aims to increase confidence in and knowledge of the use of herbs for healing. You will go away with at least two herbal preparations that you have helped to make and lots of ideas for more
  • ONE-DAY SPICE COURSE: Exploring the medicinal use of spices - a practical day workshop making cordials, teas, infused oils, and other warming remedies with cardamom, frankincense, fennel, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and many others. And maybe even a vermouth!
  • THE ART OF PERFUMERY: An appreciation of a lost art as we explore the creative and sensual possibilities of using natural oils in perfumery. Natural essences resonate with our emotions and memories, and are in tune with our bodies, minds and spirits. During this weekend course you will delight in the aromas of the natural world while creating your own individual perfumes, using just essential oils and other natural ingredients. Blend your own eau de cologne, eau de toilette and make a solid perfume using shea butter and jojoba oil.
  • HERBAL REMEDIES PART 1: A practical introduction to the preparation and use of herbs.
  • basic principles of herbal medicine and self help guidelines;
  • identification, growing, harvesting, drying and storage of herbs;
  • cosmetic and medicinal preparations such as teas, tinctures, inhalations, baths, rubs, ointments, creams, syrups and infused oils;
  • exploration and harvesting of herbs from my own organic garden at Castle Orchard.
  • HERBAL REMEDIES PART 2: A further practical course, extending the knowledge gained in Part 1. It will include identification, harvesting, preparing and making remedies. We will go deeper into using herbs in all sorts of ways. The weekend will be structured around 6 different body systems, discussing the causes and treatments of common ailments relating to, or manifesting as, symptoms in these systems.
  • women's hormonal remedies, from puberty to menopause;
  • immune system herbs, e.g. echinacea, milk thistle, dandelion and other immune modulators;
  • nervous system, e.g. cardamom as a nerve tonic, plus native remedies;
  • bones and joints, e.g. anti inflammatory massage oils, hot oil, detoxing;
  • respiratory, using such treatments as frankincense steam inhalations, syrup blends;
  • urinary herbs, discussing blending a good urinary tonic tea and how to treat acute infections.
  • As always, the guiding principles of herbal treatment will be a constantly referred to, and there will be time to discuss examples of how to approach different ailments. We will aim to know much more about about 12 different herbs and how to use them in different ways.
  • HERBAL REMEDIES PART 3: Integrating the above this course will examine:
  • the skin, the largest organ of the body;
  • the circulatory system;
  • the digestive system;
  • the ears, nose, throat and eyes;
  • the glandular system.
  • This will build on the knowledge and wisdom you have built up from previous courses and add new ideas about how to use herbs therapeutically.
  • HERBAL DELIGHTS 2018: A weekend residential herbal course with Rowan McOnegal at Hellens Manor, Herefordshire, from June 22nd to 24th 2018
  • A unique midsummer residential weekend retreat at the beautiful Hellens Manor in Herefordshire.
  • Experience harvesting, making and sampling aromatic tisanes and cordials, pot herbs and salads, and medicinal and cosmetic remedies.
  • Practical herbal medicine making and natural perfumery, whilst staying in the restored Georgian Stables in the heart of the gardens.
  • Cost (£450.00) includes all course materials, equipment and fully catered accommodation for Friday and Saturday. All the food will be organic and home cooked - please advise me of any special dietary requirements. A tour of Hellens Manor is also include and will be offered on Friday evening.
